Coliving in Canggu
Canggu is Bali's nomad epicenter — a surf town turned coworking paradise where rice paddies meet laptop cafes, and the digital nomad community is one of the most active in the world.
Canggu has transformed from a sleepy surf village to the world’s most concentrated digital nomad hub in under a decade. The density of coworking spaces, coliving options, and nomad-friendly cafes per square kilometer is unmatched anywhere on earth. Love it or critique it, Canggu is the default destination for first-time nomads heading to Southeast Asia.
Best time to visit
The dry season (April-October) is optimal. Sunny days, manageable humidity, and the surf is at its best. The rainy season (November-March) brings daily afternoon downpours, higher humidity, and road flooding — Canggu’s drainage is terrible. That said, rainy season means fewer tourists, lower prices, and dramatic sunsets between storms. December-January is peak season regardless of weather, with prices jumping 30-50%.
Nomad community scene
Canggu’s nomad community is massive and well-organized. Dojo Bali pioneered the coworking-as-community model here, and the concept has since multiplied. Weekly events include Sunday markets, entrepreneur meetups, surf sessions, yoga classes, and numerous networking events. The community skews younger (25-35) and social — if you’re looking for a quiet, introspective nomad experience, Ubud is a better fit.
The downside of a large community is that it can feel like a bubble. It’s easy to spend months in Canggu without meaningfully engaging with Balinese culture. Make an effort — visit temples during ceremonies, eat at local warungs beyond the smoothie bowl cafes, and learn basic Indonesian phrases. The Balinese are extraordinarily warm and hospitable when you meet them halfway.
Internet and coworking
WiFi is Canggu’s Achilles’ heel. The infrastructure hasn’t kept pace with the demand. Coworking spaces are the reliable option: Dojo Bali (the original, strong community), Outpost (two locations, professional setup), B-Work Bali (budget-friendly), and ZIN Cafe (hybrid cafe-coworking). Expect 50-100 Mbps at dedicated coworking spaces.
Home internet via IndiHome fiber is available but installation is notoriously slow and reliability varies by area. Many nomads rely on a combination of coworking memberships and Telkomsel mobile data (4G/5G) as backup. For important video calls, always use a coworking space — cafe WiFi collapses during peak hours.

Where to stay in Canggu
Batu Bolong / Echo Beach
The heart of nomad Canggu. Walking distance to the main surf breaks, Deus Ex Machina, and dozens of cafes. The highest concentration of coworking spaces and social events. Rent is higher and traffic is terrible, but the community is unbeatable.
Berawa
Slightly south of Batu Bolong, more upscale with boutique hotels and fancier restaurants. Quieter streets, newer villas with pools. Good balance of proximity to the action without being in the thick of it. Popular with couples and longer-term nomads.
Pererenan
The quieter northern extension of Canggu. Rice paddies still visible, less traffic, more traditional Balinese feel. Growing cafe scene but still calmer than Batu Bolong. Best for focused work with occasional trips south for socializing.

Common Questions
How's the WiFi in Canggu for remote work?
It's the weakest link in Canggu's nomad proposition. Home fiber is available but installation can take weeks. Coworking spaces (Dojo, Outpost, B-Work) reliably offer 50-100 Mbps. Cafes range from excellent to unusable — always check before settling in. A local SIM with Telkomsel 4G is essential backup.
Is Canggu overcrowded?
The main strip (Batu Bolong to Echo Beach) is congested — especially the traffic. But the community and infrastructure make up for it. If crowds bother you, base yourself in Pererenan or Berawa and ride into the center for events. Avoid December-January (peak tourist season).
Canggu or Ubud for remote work?
Canggu: social, surf, nightlife, bigger nomad community, more coworking options. Ubud: quieter, cultural, yoga/wellness focus, better air quality, surrounded by jungle and rice terraces. Many nomads split time between both — they're only 45 minutes apart by scooter.
