Coliving in Azores

The Azores are Portugal's mid-Atlantic archipelago — volcanic landscapes, hot springs, whale watching, and a growing remote work community drawn by nature, quiet, and the unique experience of living on a volcanic island in the middle of the ocean.

The Azores are for a specific type of remote worker: someone who values nature, quiet, and the novelty of living on a volcanic island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean over nightlife, networking events, and urban convenience. If that sounds appealing, the Azores deliver an experience you genuinely cannot get elsewhere. Volcanic crater lakes you can swim in, natural hot springs steaming from the earth, whale watching from shore, and green landscapes that look more like Ireland than Portugal.

Ponta Delgada is the practical base — it’s small but functional, with supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, a hospital, and the only real coworking options. The rest of Sao Miguel island is nature: waterfalls, tea plantations (the only ones in Europe), thermal baths, and empty hiking trails. Your social life will depend heavily on the coliving/coworking community and your own initiative.

Why Azores for coliving

The value proposition is unique: EU territory with Portuguese prices, extraordinary nature, genuine quiet, and enough infrastructure to work productively. The timezone (UTC-1) is unusual but creates interesting overlap — you’re between Europe and the Americas, which works for teams spanning both continents.

Coliving here makes particular sense because the alternative — finding your own apartment, dealing with limited options, and potentially being isolated — is harder than in a city. The coliving spaces on Sao Miguel provide community, guaranteed WiFi, and the practical support that makes island living work for remote workers.

The nomad scene

Small but genuine. The Azores nomad community is tight-knit by necessity — when there are only 50-100 nomads on the island at any time, you get to know everyone. Coworking spaces and coliving houses organize regular social events, group hikes, and dinners. The community is nature-oriented: expect hiking groups, surf sessions, and hot spring visits rather than networking events and pitch nights. People who come here tend to be more experienced nomads who’ve done the Bali/Lisbon circuit and want something quieter and more grounding.

Where to stay in Azores

Ponta Delgada (Sao Miguel)

The capital and only real city in the Azores. Waterfront promenade, university, restaurants, and the only coworking infrastructure on the islands. Small (70,000 people) but has everything you need. Most nomads base here.

Ribeira Grande (Sao Miguel)

Northern coast town with surf culture, thermal pools, and a quieter alternative to Ponta Delgada. 20-minute drive to the capital. Fewer services but better nature access and ocean proximity.

Horta (Faial)

Famous among sailors and increasingly known to nomads. The marina, Peter Cafe Sport, and a small international community. Very small town on a smaller island. For people who want genuine isolation and natural beauty.

Angra do Heroismo (Terceira)

UNESCO World Heritage old town. Colorful buildings, strong local culture, imperia festivals. Even quieter than Sao Miguel. Limited nomad infrastructure but beautiful for a focused work retreat.

Common Questions

Is the internet good enough for remote work?

In Ponta Delgada, yes — fiber connections of 50-100 Mbps are available. Outside the main towns, speeds drop significantly. Always verify internet before booking accommodation. The coworking spaces in Ponta Delgada have reliable connections. Mobile 4G coverage is good across Sao Miguel.

Will I get island fever?

Possibly. Sao Miguel is 65km long and Ponta Delgada is a small city. If you need big-city energy, constant social options, and variety, the Azores will feel limiting after a month. If you thrive on nature, routine, and quiet focus time — and can entertain yourself — it's paradise. Inter-island flights are cheap if you want to explore the archipelago.

What's there to do outside of work?

The nature is extraordinary: volcanic crater lakes, hot springs (free natural ones), whale and dolphin watching, diving, surfing, hiking trails through lush green landscapes. The food is excellent — fresh fish, Azorean beef, local cheese, and cozido das furnas (stew cooked in volcanic ground). It's an outdoor enthusiast's dream.
