Coliving in Ericeira

Ericeira is a charming surf town 40 minutes north of Lisbon that has become one of Europe's most popular coliving destinations — small-town vibes, world-class waves, and a tight-knit nomad community.

14 colivings 50-100 Mbps (fiber available) WiFi Best: May-October for the best weather and surf

Ericeira punches well above its weight as a coliving destination. This small fishing town — population around 10,000 — has become a European nomad magnet thanks to its World Surfing Reserve status, proximity to Lisbon, and an unusually high concentration of coliving spaces for its size.

Best time to visit

Summer (June-September) brings warm weather, consistent surf, and the most active social scene. The town fills up but never feels as overwhelming as Lisbon or Barcelona. Spring (April-May) and early autumn (October) offer the best balance — good weather, smaller crowds, and lower prices. Winter is quiet, with temperatures around 10-15°C and regular rain, but the surf is biggest and most powerful. Many colivings offer lower winter rates.

Nomad community scene

Ericeira’s nomad community is intimate compared to Lisbon or Bali. The small town means you’ll run into the same people at the coffee shop, the surf break, and the evening meetup. This creates genuine friendships faster than in larger hubs. Outsite Ericeira was one of the early coliving pioneers here, and several other operators have followed — including surf-focused colivings that combine lessons with coworking.

Community events center around surf, wellness, and informal social gatherings. Friday evening drinks on the cliffs, Saturday morning surf sessions, and Sunday brunches are the weekly rhythm. The international crowd is predominantly European — Portuguese, German, French, Dutch — with a growing number of Americans and South Americans.

Internet and coworking

Portugal’s fiber infrastructure reaches Ericeira, and most colivings and apartments offer 50-100 Mbps connections. The coworking scene is smaller than Lisbon’s but sufficient: several colivings have dedicated coworking areas open to non-residents, and a handful of standalone spaces have opened. Cafes along the main street are generally laptop-friendly during off-peak hours, though space is limited.

For reliable video calls, stick to coworking spaces or your accommodation’s WiFi. Mobile data via MEO, NOS, or Vodafone provides solid 4G backup throughout the town. The main limitation is variety — if you like rotating between five different coworking spaces, Ericeira will feel limited. If you prefer one reliable spot and a consistent routine, it’s ideal.

Where to stay in Ericeira

Town Center (Vila)

The old fishing village core. Narrow streets, whitewashed buildings, and the main square. Walking distance to restaurants, surf shops, and the cliffs. Most coliving spaces are here or nearby. Compact and walkable but parking is a nightmare.

Ribeira d'Ilhas Area

North of the center, close to the famous surf break. Quieter, more residential, with some villas and newer developments. Better for surfers who want to be near the waves. You'll need a car or bike for daily errands.

São Julião / South

South towards Lisbon, more rural and spacious. Cheaper accommodations, some farm-style coliving properties. Isolated without transport but peaceful for focused work. Growing number of yoga retreats and wellness-oriented colivings.

Common Questions

Is Ericeira good for non-surfers?

Absolutely. While surfing is central to the identity, many nomads come for the coliving scene, coastal walks, proximity to Lisbon, and the tight community. The cliff-top views, fresh seafood, and relaxed pace work whether or not you surf. That said, you'll probably end up trying it.

Do I need a car in Ericeira?

Within the town center, no — it's walkable. But for exploring the coast, getting to Lisbon, or reaching colivings outside the center, a car helps significantly. The bus to Lisbon runs regularly (Mafrense line, ~1 hour) but isn't convenient for daily commuting.

How does Ericeira compare to Lisbon for remote work?

Ericeira is smaller, quieter, and more community-oriented. You'll know most of the nomad crowd within a week. Lisbon offers more variety, bigger events, and city amenities. Many nomads do a month in each — Ericeira for focused work and nature, Lisbon for networking and culture.
