Novovento

Novovento is a coliving in a traditional Azorean stone house in Ginetes, on São Miguel island. Sea views, a fruit garden, and a 4.9-star rating across 43 reviews. The Azores remain one of Europe’s most underrated destinations for remote work.

The Experience

The Azores are the anti-Lisbon: wild, volcanic, quiet, and extraordinarily green. Days at Novovento split between focused work in the stone house and exploring crater lakes, hot springs, and whale-watching trips. The fruit garden provides much of the produce for communal meals. With only 8 guests maximum, the community is intimate.

The Space

A restored traditional stone house with sea views, coworking area, and communal kitchen set among fruit trees. The Azores’ volcanic landscape — calderas, hot springs, green pastures — begins outside the front door.

Who It’s For

The Vibe

Wake up to the sound of the Atlantic and pick fruit from the garden for breakfast. Work in the stone house coworking through the morning. Afternoon might be a hot spring soak at Caldeira Velha, a hike around Sete Cidades, or just reading in the garden. Evenings are intimate — with 8 people max, dinner conversations go deep.

Whale watching from Ponta Delgada, hiking the crater lake at Sete Cidades, soaking in natural hot springs, or exploring the tea plantations on the island's east side.

Living in São Miguel, Azores

The Azores are a volcanic archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic, about 1,500km west of mainland Portugal. São Miguel is the largest island and the gateway — a place of crater lakes, hot springs, green pastures, and a wild coastline that feels more like Iceland than Portugal. Except it's subtropical, Portuguese-speaking, and has proper espresso.

Ginetes is a small village on the western tip of São Miguel, about 30 minutes from Ponta Delgada (the capital, population 70,000). The pace is genuinely slow. Costs are lower than mainland Portugal: coffee 0.70-1 EUR, lunch 7-10 EUR, dinner 12-20 EUR. The internet is surprisingly good for a mid-Atlantic island — fibre has reached most villages. Direct flights connect Ponta Delgada to Lisbon (2 hours), London, Frankfurt, and Boston, making it one of the most accessible remote destinations in the Atlantic.

Sete Cidades

Twin crater lakes (one blue, one green) inside a massive volcanic caldera. The rim hike gives you views that look photoshopped but aren't. 20 minutes from Ginetes.

Furnas Hot Springs & Cozido

A geothermal valley with boiling springs, mud pools, and a traditional stew (cozido das Furnas) cooked underground in volcanic heat. About 1 hour east.

Whale Watching

Sperm whales, blue whales (spring), and dolphins year-round. Ponta Delgada has several operators — half-day trips from 55 EUR.

The Honest Briefing

Fly into Ponta Delgada (PDL) — SATA, Ryanair, and TAP connect to Lisbon, plus seasonal flights from other European cities. Rent a car — it's essential on São Miguel (around 25-30 EUR/day). MEO or NOS SIMs work well on the island, about 10-15 EUR for a month of data.

Where to Eat

  • 🍽Alabote, Ginetes — tiny local restaurant with grilled fish and Azorean stews, 8-12 EUR
  • 🍽Caloura Bar, Caloura — seafood on a natural ocean pool, stunning setting, 12-20 EUR
  • 🍽A Tasca, Ponta Delgada — traditional Azorean food in the capital, no-frills, great portions, 8-14 EUR

Common Questions

What's the WiFi like?

50+ Mbps — good for video calls and regular work. The Azores have decent fibre coverage that extends to smaller villages like Ginetes. It's not 200 Mbps, but it's reliable.

What's included in the price?

Room in the stone house, coworking access, WiFi, communal kitchen, and access to the fruit garden. Meals are self-organized, with garden produce available.

How do I get there?

Fly to Ponta Delgada (PDL) — direct from Lisbon (2 hours), plus seasonal connections from London, Frankfurt, and Boston. Rent a car at the airport — you'll need one.

Is it too remote?

It's remote but not isolated. Ponta Delgada is 25 minutes away with supermarkets, restaurants, and city amenities. The island itself has everything you need — it's the mental distance from the mainland that makes it special.

What's the weather like?

Mild year-round: 15-25°C. It rains more than mainland Portugal — the lush green landscape is the trade-off. Microclimates mean you can drive 20 minutes and find sunshine. Bring layers.
