Gato Azul

Gato Azul is a coliving in an ancient house in La Orotava, one of Tenerife’s most beautiful towns — a valley of colonial mansions, banana plantations, and views up to Mount Teide. 500 Mbps internet and a rooftop workspace add the modern layer.

The Experience

La Orotava is the cultural heart of northern Tenerife: a town of carved wooden balconies, cobblestone streets, and botanical gardens, set in a valley that drops from the volcano to the ocean. Gato Azul occupies a historic house that channels this character, with a rooftop coworking space that offers valley-to-ocean views. Ten bedrooms and a community that balances productivity with exploration.

The Space

A historic house with ten bedrooms, rooftop coworking space with 500 Mbps fibre, communal kitchen, and terraces. La Orotava’s town centre — restaurants, markets, and the famous Botanical Garden — is walkable.

Who It’s For

The Vibe

Morning coffee on the terrace with valley views, then focused work in the rooftop coworking space. Afternoons are for exploring La Orotava's old town, hiking in the Orotava valley, or driving up to Teide. Evenings bring communal cooking, old-town tapas, or drinks on the rooftop watching the sunset over the Atlantic.

Drive up to Mount Teide for stargazing (one of the world's best spots), beach days at Playa del Bollullo, or hikes through the Anaga cloud forest in the northeast.

Living in Northern Tenerife

Northern Tenerife is a different island from the resort-heavy south. La Orotava sits in the Orotava valley — a steep green corridor that drops from Mount Teide (3,718m) to the Atlantic coast. The town itself is one of Tenerife's most beautiful: colonial mansions with carved wooden balconies, the centuries-old Botanical Garden, and cobblestone streets that feel more Latin American than European.

The climate in the north is subtropical — greener and slightly cooler than the south, with temperatures between 18-28°C year-round. The banana plantations that terrace the valley are still working farms. Cloud formations roll through the valley dramatically, especially in the afternoon.

For remote workers, northern Tenerife offers something the south doesn't: character. Puerto de la Cruz (10 minutes) has the bars, restaurants, and beach access. La Orotava has the beauty and calm. Mount Teide, just 45 minutes up the mountain road, has some of the world's clearest skies for stargazing. And the cost of living is genuinely low for a place with year-round warmth and EU infrastructure.

Mount Teide National Park

Spain's highest peak and a UNESCO site. Drive to the base, hike the trails, and stay for sunset — the shadow of Teide stretches across the ocean.

Jardín Botánico

Founded in 1788, this is one of Europe's oldest botanical gardens. Giant tropical trees, orchids, and an atmosphere of green calm. Entry €3.

Playa del Bollullo

A black volcanic sand beach hidden at the bottom of banana plantation cliffs. Reached by a steep path from the coast road, no tourists in sight.

The Honest Briefing

Fly into Tenerife North Airport (TFN), 20 minutes from La Orotava, or Tenerife South (TFS), about 1 hour. TITSA buses connect most of the island (€1.25-5 per ride with a TenMas card). A car is handy for Teide and beaches but not essential for daily life. EU SIMs work; local Spanish SIMs from any phone shop.
