Bencomo Coliving

Bencomo Coliving is a surf and work base in Santa Ursula, northern Tenerife, run by two local brothers who grew up on the island. Five private rooms, a swimming pool, and genuine local knowledge make it stand out from the more polished operations nearby.

The Experience

Mornings start with surf sessions at the north coast’s powerful breaks — the brothers know every spot and its moods. After surfing, the pool and coworking area take over. Evenings often involve shared cooking or exploring the tapas bars of nearby Puerto de la Cruz. The vibe is low-key, friendly, and distinctly Canarian rather than generic digital-nomad.

The Space

A traditional Canarian house with five private rooms, a swimming pool, and communal kitchen and living areas. The coworking setup is simple but functional with fast internet. Northern Tenerife’s lush, green landscape is a world away from the tourist-heavy south.

Who It’s For

Surfers and remote workers who want an affordable, authentic Tenerife experience with locals rather than a curated nomad bubble. The small size and local ownership give it a character that’s hard to replicate.

The Vibe

Early mornings are for surf — the brothers know which breaks are working before you've finished your coffee. Mid-morning, people settle into work at the coworking space or by the pool. Afternoons are loose — a swim, a walk to the village, or more work. Evenings usually involve shared cooking or heading to Puerto de la Cruz for tapas and wine.

Weekends open up for hikes in Anaga Rural Park, a drive up to Mount Teide, or exploring the wineries and villages in the green north of the island.

Living in Santa Ursula, Northern Tenerife

Northern Tenerife is the green, wet, wild half of the island — the opposite of the resort-heavy south. Santa Ursula sits between Puerto de la Cruz and La Orotava, on the slopes above the coast with views of Mount Teide. The landscape is lush, the air smells like banana plantations, and the tourist density is low.

Puerto de la Cruz, 10 minutes down the hill, has the restaurants, bars, and waterfront promenade. La Orotava, 10 minutes uphill, has one of the most beautiful old towns in the Canaries. The surf spots — El Socorro, Martiánez, Almáciga — are powerful and consistent, with fewer crowds than the south coast breaks.

Tenerife's cost of living is lower than mainland Spain. A menu del día runs €8-11, a beer is €2, and a private apartment outside of coliving costs €500-700/month. The weather in the north is warmer than you'd think — 18-24°C year-round, with occasional clouds that keep everything green.

Mount Teide

Spain's highest peak (3,718m) with a cable car to near the summit. The drive up through the volcanic landscape feels like another planet. Clear nights here have some of the best stargazing in Europe.

Anaga Rural Park

Ancient laurel forests on the northeast tip of the island. Hiking trails wind through cloud forest, volcanic ridgelines, and remote villages accessible only on foot.

Guachinches

Unofficial family-run restaurants in the north where local winemakers serve their own wine with home-cooked food. No signs, no menus, just follow the locals. Meals run €5-8.

The Honest Briefing

Fly into Tenerife North Airport (TFN) if possible — it's 20 minutes from Santa Ursula. South airport (TFS) is further but has more international flights (about 1 hour by car). Rent a car for €15-20/day — the north is not well served by public transport. A Movistar or Vodafone SIM costs €10-15 at any phone shop.

Where to Eat

  • 🍽Tasca El Olivo, Puerto de la Cruz — traditional Canarian tapas, the papas arrugadas are perfect, €8-12
  • 🍽Bodega Julian, La Orotava — guachinche-style wine and food in an old bodega, €6-10

Common Questions

What's the WiFi like?

100 Mbps fibre — reliable for video calls and regular remote work.

What's included in the price?

Private room, coworking access, pool, communal kitchen and living areas, and WiFi. Meals are not included but the shared kitchen is well-equipped and local markets are cheap.

How do I get there?

Fly into Tenerife North (TFN, 20 min) or Tenerife South (TFS, 1 hour). Rent a car — essential for exploring the north coast and accessing surf spots.

Do I need to surf?

Not at all. The surf is a big part of the vibe, but plenty of residents are here for the weather, the pool, the hiking, and the food. The brothers are just as happy showing you a guachinche as a surf break.

How small is it?

10 guests maximum across 5 rooms. It's deliberately intimate — you'll know everyone by name within a day.
