Alt Coliving

Alt Coliving is a coliving and coworking community for digital nomads in Chiang Mai, Thailand, operating across two complementary properties that share a single community. Founded in 2018, it offers remote workers a genuine home base in one of Southeast Asia’s most popular and affordable nomad cities, with the flexibility to choose between an urban hub in the centre of town and a calmer riverside retreat depending on the work and lifestyle balance they’re after.

The Experience

The two Alt properties — Alt_ChiangMai and Alt_PingRiver — are designed to complement each other rather than compete. Alt_ChiangMai sits in the heart of the city at Intrawarorot Road in the Si Phum district, close to the Old City’s temples, markets, and restaurants. Alt_PingRiver is a few kilometres away on the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, set beside the Ping River in a quieter, more reflective environment suited to longer focus stretches.

Both properties share an events calendar that runs throughout the week — yoga sessions, ice bath workshops, dumpling nights, social outings, digital nomad parties, and community workshops. Events are held both on-site and across the city, giving residents easy access to Chiang Mai’s wider nomad scene. The community is the consistent thread between both properties: members move between the two, and the Alt team actively builds connections across the group.

The Space

Rooms are private and en-suite, with weekly housekeeping included. Capacity across both properties reaches up to 20 guests. The coworking setup is available to residents throughout the day, with the community cafe on-site serving organic Chiang Mai coffee and locally made snacks from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM daily. Pricing runs from €500 to €900 per month depending on room type and season. Minimum stay is one month.

Who It’s For

Alt Coliving suits digital nomads who want a proper community home in Chiang Mai rather than just a room to sleep in. The dual-property setup gives residents genuine variety — city energy when wanted, riverside calm when needed — without having to change accommodation. The events programme and active community team make it well-suited to people arriving solo. The mix of residents tends toward remote workers, freelancers, and location-independent entrepreneurs, predominantly English-speaking and internationally diverse.

Location Highlights

Chiang Mai is consistently rated one of the best cities in the world for digital nomads — low cost of living, reliable infrastructure, excellent food scene, proximity to nature, and a large established expat and nomad community. The Old City’s moat, Doi Suthep mountain, Sunday Walking Street, and dozens of specialist coworking cafes are all within easy reach of both Alt properties. Visa options for longer stays are practical from Thailand, and flights connect Chiang Mai to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and beyond.

The Vibe

Mornings start with organic coffee from the on-site cafe (open 7:30 AM) and slow entries into the coworking space. By 10 AM, both properties are heads-down working. Afternoons, some people shift to a cafe in the Old City for a change of scenery. Evenings split between community events — ice bath sessions, dumpling nights, yoga — and self-organized dinners at the Warorot Market food stalls or Nimman Road restaurants.

Weekends often mean day trips to Doi Inthanon, the hot springs in San Kamphaeng, or motorbike rides through the Mae Sa valley. Others keep it low-key with temple visits, Sunday Walking Street browsing, or a long brunch at one of the Old City's specialty cafes.

Living in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai has been a digital nomad capital for over a decade and it's earned the title honestly. The city runs on a dual engine: a proper Thai city with 300+ temples, night bazaars, and a deep food culture — and a parallel infrastructure of coworking spaces, specialty coffee shops, and international communities that make remote work feel effortless.

The cost of living is genuinely low. A plate of khao soi at a local stall costs 50-60 THB (around €1.30). A month in a serviced apartment runs €300-500. SIM cards with unlimited data are €10/month. The city has dozens of coworking cafes with reliable fiber internet, and most restaurants have functional WiFi too. The Old City inside the moat is walkable and flat; outside it, grab a Bolt or rent a scooter for 3,000 THB/month.

Weather splits into three seasons: hot (March-May, 35°C+), rainy (June-October, afternoon showers), and cool (November-February, perfect 20-28°C). The burning season in March-April brings smoke haze that's genuinely unpleasant — worth avoiding. November to February is peak nomad season for good reason.

Doi Suthep Temple

The golden temple overlooking the city, 306 steps up the mountainside. Go at sunrise before the tour groups arrive. The mountain road is also popular for morning runs and cycling.

Sunday Walking Street

Ratchadamnoen Road transforms into a massive night market every Sunday evening — street food, handicrafts, live music. The Saturday version on Wualai Road is smaller and less hectic.

Doi Inthanon Day Trip

Thailand's highest peak, 90 minutes from the city. Waterfalls, cloud forest trails, and twin pagodas at the summit. Bring a jacket — it's genuinely cold up top.

I had a great time during my month here. They do a lot of community events and I was able to connect with others staying at Alt and made some great friendships. The breakfasts are pretty good, the rooms are comfortable, the showers are nice, and the cowork area is really good, with quiet areas for m

Espace de coworking sérieux où l'on fait de belles rencontres. Les prix sont un peu plus élevés qu'ailleurs à Chiang Mai.

I just finished a month-long stay at both Alt_Chiang Mai and Alt_Ping River and honestly, I loved it. As a first-time solo female traveler, I was a little nervous, but the team here—Khawn, Gee, P’cake, JJ, Cake, and the housekeeping crew—made me feel so welcome and looked after. They are genuinely t

The Honest Briefing

Fly into Chiang Mai International (CNX) — it's 15 minutes from the Old City by Bolt (around 100 THB). Get a Thai SIM at the airport from AIS or True Move — unlimited data plans run 300-600 THB/month. Download Grab and Bolt for transport. The first thing most nomads do is rent a scooter — shops on every corner, 3,000 THB/month, international license technically required.

Community & Operations

We built two properties because one space can't do everything. Some days you need city energy; other days you need river quiet. The community moves between both, and that's what makes it work.

Common Questions

What's the WiFi like?

100+ Mbps fiber at both properties. Chiang Mai's internet infrastructure is solid — you won't have connectivity issues for video calls or heavy uploads.

What's included in the price?

Private en-suite room, weekly housekeeping, access to coworking at both properties, community events, and the on-site cafe (coffee and snacks purchased separately). Meals are not included but the shared kitchen is fully equipped.

How do I get there?

Fly into Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX). Direct flights from Bangkok (1 hour), Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and other Asian hubs. From the airport, a Bolt or Grab to the Old City costs around 100 THB (€2.70). The Alt team shares arrival instructions before you land.

Can I switch between the two properties?

You're booked into one property but you can use the coworking and common areas at both. The community calendar runs across both locations, so you'll meet people from the other house at events throughout the week.

Do I need a visa?

Most nationalities get 30-60 days visa-exempt on arrival. For longer stays, the Thailand DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) gives 180 days and is renewable. The Alt team can point you to local visa agents who handle extensions.
