AfricaNomads

AfricaNomads hosts curated coliving retreats across Kenya, from Nairobi to the coast of Lamu, blending remote work with authentic African cultural experiences. Each retreat is designed and led by local hosts who know the landscape, the people, and the hidden corners that most travelers never find.

The Experience

Retreats combine productive coworking with safaris, community projects, and cultural immersion. Daily breakfasts bring the group together, while afternoons might include visits to local markets, Maasai villages, or wildlife reserves. The focus is on building genuine connections — both within the group and with the local community.

The Space

Accommodation varies by retreat but typically includes well-appointed lodges or guesthouses with reliable internet, dedicated workspace, and communal areas. Properties are selected for their character, connectivity, and proximity to both nature and local life.

Who It’s For

AfricaNomads works best for adventurous remote workers who want to experience Africa beyond the tourist trail. The retreats attract impact-driven professionals, creatives, and entrepreneurs who value cultural depth alongside productivity.

Living in Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi is East Africa's tech and creative capital — a city of 5 million people with a growing startup scene, excellent coffee culture, and wildlife literally on its doorstep. Nairobi National Park is the only national park inside a major city, with lions, giraffes, and rhinos visible against the skyline.

The city has a reputation for traffic and chaos, but the neighborhoods where nomads actually spend time — Westlands, Karen, Kilimani — are leafy, cafe-filled, and surprisingly walkable. The food scene spans Kenyan nyama choma to Ethiopian injera to some of the best Indian food outside the subcontinent.

Kenya's time zone (UTC+3) works well for European business hours. The cost of living is moderate — cheaper than Cape Town, more expensive than Southeast Asia. Nairobi's energy is entrepreneurial and optimistic, and the tech community (iHub, Nairobi Garage) is genuine and welcoming.

Nairobi National Park

A full safari experience 15 minutes from downtown. Early morning drives give the best wildlife sightings — expect zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, and sometimes lions with the city skyline behind them.

Karen Blixen Museum

The 'Out of Africa' farmhouse in the Karen suburb, set in beautiful gardens with views of the Ngong Hills. A window into colonial Kenya's complex history.

Kazuri Beads Factory

A women's cooperative in Karen making hand-painted ceramic beads. A genuine social enterprise worth supporting, and the beads make great souvenirs.

The Honest Briefing

Fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO). Download Bolt or Uber before landing — they're the safest and cheapest way around Nairobi (avoid unmarked taxis). Get a Safaricom SIM at the airport for about KES 500 (€3.50) and load M-Pesa — it's Kenya's mobile money system and widely used. Carry some cash for markets but cards work in most restaurants and shops in the nicer neighborhoods.

Where to Eat

  • 🍽Mama Oliech, Kilimani — legendary Kenyan fish and ugali, locals queue for this, KES 500-800 (€3.50-5.50)
  • 🍽Brew Bistro, Westlands — craft beer and burgers, rooftop vibe, KES 1000-1500 (€7-10)
  • 🍽Tin Roof Cafe, Karen — garden brunch spot with excellent coffee, KES 600-900 (€4-6)
  • 🍽Carnivore Restaurant, Langata — all-you-can-eat game meat BBQ, a Nairobi institution, KES 3500 (€24)
  • 🍽Diamond Plaza Food Court, Parklands — the best cheap Indian food in East Africa, KES 300-500 (€2-3.50)

Common Questions

What's the WiFi like?

50+ Mbps at retreat locations. Kenya's mobile internet (4G via Safaricom) is reliable in Nairobi and works as backup. Remote locations may have satellite internet.

What's included in the price?

Accommodation, daily breakfast, coworking access, cultural excursions, safari trips, and community activities. The all-inclusive format means you don't need much extra budget beyond personal spending.

How do I get there?

Fly into Nairobi (NBO). Most European and Middle Eastern airlines fly direct. Use Uber or Bolt from the airport to your accommodation — about KES 1500-2500 (€10-17).

Is Nairobi safe?

Like any large city, use common sense — stick to known neighborhoods, use ride apps instead of street taxis, and don't flash expensive gear. The retreat neighborhoods (Karen, Westlands, Kilimani) are generally safe and well-patrolled.

Do I need vaccinations?

Yellow fever vaccination is required for entry. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for trips outside Nairobi. Consult your travel doctor 6-8 weeks before departure.
