Living in Sofia, Bulgaria

Sofia is the European capital that most nomads discover by accident — and then keep coming back to. It sits at the base of Vitosha Mountain, a 2,290m peak that you can hike after work and be back for dinner. The city has world-class hot springs (free public mineral water fountains on the street), a growing tech scene, and costs that make even Lisbon look expensive.

A restaurant lunch runs EUR 5-8, a craft beer EUR 2-3, and a month's gym membership EUR 20-30. The food scene mixes Balkan traditions (shopska salad, banitsa pastry, grilled meats) with a new wave of international restaurants that would hold their own in Berlin or Amsterdam. Coffee culture is maturing fast.

Sofia's nightlife punches above its weight — cocktail bars, live music, and clubs that run until dawn, all at Eastern European prices. The city is walkable, the metro is modern (if limited), and the central park system gives you green space without leaving the urban core. Flights are cheap to the rest of Europe. The main downside: winter (December-February) is cold and grey.

Vitosha Mountain hike

Take bus 66 to the trailhead and hike to Cherni Vrah peak (2,290m) in a few hours. In winter, there's skiing. In summer, wildflowers and panoramic city views.

Rila Monastery day trip

Bulgaria's most iconic monastery, a UNESCO site in the mountains. Stunning frescoes and a peaceful forest setting — 2 hours from Sofia by bus or car.

Mineral baths

Sofia sits on hot springs. The Central Mineral Baths building is a landmark, and free mineral water flows from public taps around the city. The public bath in Bankya (30 min) costs EUR 3.

Common Questions

What's the WiFi like?

200 Mbps — Bulgaria has excellent internet infrastructure. Fast, reliable, and consistent. Video calls are not an issue.

What's included in the price?

Ensuite room, coworking access, utilities, cleaning, and regular community events. Meals are not included — but eating out in Sofia is remarkably cheap.

How do I get there?

Fly into Sofia Airport (SOF). Metro line 1 runs directly to the city centre in 30 minutes for EUR 0.80. Ryanair, Wizz Air, and others serve Sofia from all over Europe.

Is Sofia good for digital nomads?

Increasingly yes. Fast internet, low costs, walkable centre, mountain access, and a growing community of remote workers. It lacks the established nomad infrastructure of Lisbon or Chiang Mai, but that's changing fast.

What about winter?

December to February is cold (around 0°C) and grey. If you don't mind winter weather, it's also ski season at Vitosha and Bansko (2 hours away). Spring and autumn are the sweet spots.
