The Vibe
Dawn patrol surf, then a few hours of focused coworking. Lunch break might be a dip in the ocean or a hammock siesta. Afternoon work block, yoga session, then sunset beers on the beach. Community dinners happen a few times a week.
Boat trips to nearby islands, exploring the coast by ATV, or day trips to Granada or León for colonial architecture and volcano boarding.
Living in Popoyo, Pacific Coast Nicaragua
Popoyo is a surf village on Nicaragua's Pacific coast that's still years behind the development curve of places like Nosara or Tamarindo in Costa Rica. That's the draw. Uncrowded lineups, empty beaches, and a fishing-village atmosphere that hasn't been polished for tourists. The waves are world-class — consistent swells, warm water, and breaks for every level from beginner beach breaks to heavy reef.
Nicaragua is Central America's most affordable country. A casado lunch costs $3-4, a Toña beer $1-1.50, and a beachfront room can be found for $15-20/night outside of coliving arrangements. The currency (córdoba) stretches far. Infrastructure is basic — don't expect smooth roads or reliable cell service outside of towns — but that's part of the trade.
The nearest cities are Rivas (1 hour) for supplies and San Juan del Sur (45 min) for a more developed beach-town scene. Managua's airport is 2.5 hours north. The Pacific coast has a dry season from November to April (best months for waves and weather) and a rainy green season the rest of the year.
Surf Popoyo
The main break is a powerful beach break that works on any swell direction. Outer reefs deliver when it gets bigger. Board rentals $10/day, lessons $25.
Volcano boarding at Cerro Negro
Hike up an active volcano near León and board down the volcanic sand at up to 50 km/h. One of Nicaragua's most unique experiences — day trip from Popoyo.
San Juan del Sur
The closest proper beach town, 45 minutes south. Sunday Funday pool crawl is famous, and the surrounding beaches (Maderas, Playa Hermosa) are excellent.

Common Questions
What's the WiFi like?
50+ Mbps — solid for Nicaragua's Pacific coast. The coworking space has dedicated bandwidth. Bring a backup mobile data plan for redundancy, as coastal Nicaragua's internet can occasionally hiccup.
What's included in the price?
Accommodation (shared, private, or AC suite), coworking access, yoga sessions, community events, utilities, and cleaning. Meals and surf equipment are extra.
How do I get there?
Fly into Managua (MGA), then arrange a shuttle to Popoyo (2.5 hours). Most colivings can coordinate transfers. There's no public transport direct to Popoyo.
Is Nicaragua safe?
The Pacific surf coast is generally safe for travellers. Use common sense, don't walk alone on the beach at night, and you'll be fine. The surf community is established and welcoming.
When's the best season?
November to April is dry season with the most consistent swells and offshore winds. May to October is rainy but still surfable — fewer people, greener landscape, and afternoon storms rather than all-day rain.
