Living in Dikwella, Southern Sri Lanka

Dikwella is on Sri Lanka's southern coast, between the tourist hubs of Mirissa and Tangalle. It's the quieter stretch — fewer boutique hotels and Instagram cafes, more fishing villages and temple bells. The beach is long and palm-lined, the waves are surfable, and the pace is genuinely slow.

Sri Lanka's south coast has become a magnet for remote workers who want Asian culture and surf without Bali's crowds or prices. A rice and curry lunch costs LKR 300-500 ($1-1.50), a beer is LKR 500 ($1.50), and renting a scooter runs LKR 1,500/day ($4.50). The rupee has made everything remarkably affordable for foreign-currency earners.

The cultural depth is real: Buddhist temples on every headland, the colonial fort city of Galle 45 minutes west, tea plantations in the hill country a few hours north, and a food culture that's more varied than most visitors expect — hoppers, kottu, fresh seafood, and the best crab in the Indian Ocean at Ministry of Crab in Colombo.

Galle Fort

A UNESCO-listed Dutch colonial fort with rampart walks, boutique shops, and some of Sri Lanka's best restaurants. 45 minutes west by tuk-tuk or bus.

Whale watching from Mirissa

Blue whales, sperm whales, and dolphins — Mirissa is one of the best whale-watching spots globally. Season runs December to April, trips cost $30-50.

Hiriketiya Bay

A horseshoe-shaped bay 15 minutes from Dikwella with surf-friendly waves, beach cafes, and a growing nomad scene. The prettier, quieter alternative to Mirissa.
