Hub Feenix · Coliving in a converted Finnish sanatorium with makerspace and climbing wall

Hub Feenix

Hub Feenix is a coliving in a converted historic sanatorium in Raasepori, Finland — one hour from Helsinki. A makerspace, climbing wall, and 4.5-star rating across 53 reviews. This is not your typical coliving.

The Experience

Finland in general is not a typical nomad destination, which is the appeal. Saunas, midnight sun in summer, Northern Lights in winter, and a culture that values silence and personal space as much as community. Hub Feenix takes a former sanatorium — a grand building designed for rest and recovery — and fills it with creative infrastructure: a makerspace for building physical things, a climbing wall, and coworking space. Helsinki is an hour’s train ride for city fixes.

The Space

A converted sanatorium with eight bedrooms, makerspace, climbing wall, coworking area, sauna (obviously), and extensive grounds. The Finnish forest starts at the doorstep. The building’s original high ceilings and generous spaces give it a character that purpose-built colivings rarely achieve.

Who It’s For

Makers, builders, and creative technologists who want to work with their hands as well as their laptops. The climbing wall and makerspace attract a different crowd from the typical surf-and-yoga coliving.

The Vibe

Morning coffee and coworking in the high-ceilinged former sanatorium rooms. Midday might be a climbing wall session or a walk in the forest. Afternoons split between focused work, makerspace projects, or a sauna (this is Finland, after all). Evenings bring communal cooking, board games, or quiet time — the Finnish appreciation for silence is part of the culture here.

Train to Helsinki for city life, lake swimming in summer, cross-country skiing in winter, or maker projects that need a full day of uninterrupted building time.

Living in Raasepori, Finland

Raasepori is a small municipality in southern Finland, about an hour west of Helsinki by train. It's on the coast, surrounded by forests and dotted with lakes — quintessentially Finnish. The town of Ekenäs (Tammisaari in Finnish) is the local centre, a bilingual Swedish-Finnish town with a harbour, a few restaurants, and a pace that makes even rural Sweden feel rushed.

Finland is not a typical nomad destination, and that's entirely the point. The culture values quiet, personal space, and doing things properly. Summer brings midnight sun and lake swimming. Winter brings snow, Northern Lights (occasionally this far south), and the kind of cozy indoor life that Finns call "kalsarikänni" — though the official translation isn't family-friendly.

For remote workers, Finland offers world-class internet (200 Mbps is standard), safety, clean air, and a society that genuinely respects your need to focus. Helsinki is an hour away for museums, restaurants, and flights. The trade-off is cost — Finland isn't cheap — and the climate, which is cold from October to April. But if you want a creative, introspective environment unlike anything on the typical nomad trail, this is it.

Finnish forest & lake life

The forests start at the door. In summer, swim in nearby lakes and pick wild berries and mushrooms. In winter, cross-country ski on frozen lakes.

Helsinki day trips

One hour by train. Design District, Oodi Library (one of the world's best), Market Square, and a food scene that's quietly become very good.

Raseborg Castle ruins

A 14th-century castle ruin on a rocky hill, 15 minutes away. Free to visit, atmospheric, and almost always empty.

We took a building designed for rest and recovery and turned it into a place where people can build things — with their hands, not just their keyboards. The makerspace and climbing wall attract a different kind of remote worker.

Common Questions

What's the WiFi like?

200 Mbps — Finland has some of the best internet in the world. No issues with any kind of remote work.

What's included in the price?

Accommodation in the converted sanatorium, coworking, makerspace access, climbing wall, sauna, and extensive grounds. Meals are not included but the kitchen is well-equipped.

How do I get there?

Fly to Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL), then train to Karis station (about 1.5 hours total). The team can help with the last-mile transfer from the station.

What's in the makerspace?

3D printers, laser cutter, woodworking tools, electronics workbench, and general crafting supplies. If you're building a hardware prototype or just want to make something physical, this is your playground.

Is it too cold in winter?

It's cold, yes (-5 to -15°C). But the building is well-heated, the sauna is hot, and there's a particular magic to working in a warm, bright space while snow falls outside. Helsinki winter is dark, but the sanatorium's high ceilings and big windows help.
