Greek Escape

Greek Escape is a seasonal coliving in luxury villas on Crete’s south coast — operating November to April when the island empties of tourists and the light turns golden. Pool, bay views, 300 Mbps, and a perfect 5-star rating.

The Experience

Crete in winter is a revelation: warm enough for swimming on good days, empty beaches, and a food culture that’s been perfected over millennia. Plakias sits in a bay on the south coast — dramatic gorges, Venetian harbours, and mountain villages within easy reach. Greek Escape operates during the quiet season, which means lower prices, fewer tourists, and a more authentic experience of Greek island life.

The Space

Luxury villas with pool and bay views, 300 Mbps coworking setup, communal areas, and outdoor terraces. Up to 30 beds across multiple villa properties. The south coast setting provides both beach and mountain access.

Who It’s For

Remote workers who want Greek island life without summer crowds and prices. The winter-season operation is smart — Crete’s south coast is mild and beautiful from November to April, and the coliving fills the seasonal gap when most Mediterranean options close.

The Vibe

Mornings by the pool with coffee and focused work in the coworking area. Midday swim in the bay or the pool. Afternoons for gorge hikes, beach exploration, or a drive to nearby villages. Evenings bring taverna dinners — grilled fish, local wine, and the kind of slow conversation that Greek island life encourages.

Hike Samaria Gorge (one of Europe's longest), drive to Preveli palm beach, explore Rethymno's Venetian harbour, or boat trips along the south coast.

Gorge hikingCrete has dozens of gorges — Samaria is the famous one, but Kourtaliotiko near Plakias is just as dramatic and less crowded
Beach hoppingDamnoni, Preveli, and Souda Bay are all within 15 minutes of Plakias

Living in South Crete

Crete's south coast is the quiet side of Greece's largest island. While the north coast has the airports and package tourism, the south has dramatic gorges dropping to small bays, Venetian ruins, and villages where life moves at a pace that hasn't changed much in decades. Plakias is a small resort town in a wide bay backed by mountains — big enough to have tavernas, a mini-market, and a pharmacy, small enough that you'll know the locals within a week.

Greek Escape operates November to April, which is smart. Winter Crete is mild (15-20°C), prices drop by half, and the beaches are empty. You can swim on good days, hike without the summer heat, and eat at tavernas that have time to talk to you instead of serving 200 tourists. The light in winter is extraordinary — soft, golden, and perfect for thinking.

Living costs are low, especially off-season. A taverna meal runs €8-12, a coffee is €2, and local wine is €3-5 a glass. The south coast is less developed than the north, which means fewer amenities but more character. Heraklion airport is about 1.5 hours by car.

Samaria Gorge

Europe's longest gorge hike (16km) through a slot canyon to the Libyan Sea. Seasonal opening, but the shorter Imbros Gorge is accessible year-round.

Preveli Palm Beach

A palm-fringed river meets the sea at the bottom of a gorge. Accessible by car and a steep path, or by boat from Plakias. Feels tropical, looks Jurassic.

Rethymno old town

A Venetian-Ottoman harbour town with a fortress, narrow alleys, and proper restaurants. About 40 minutes east along the coast.

The Honest Briefing

Fly into Heraklion (HER) or Chania (CHQ) — both about 1.5 hours from Plakias by car. Rent a car at the airport; you'll need one on the south coast. Get a Greek SIM from Cosmote or Vodafone at the airport. The south coast road from Rethymno to Plakias is winding but beautiful.

The Team

Founders

Everyone knows Crete in summer. We fell in love with it in winter — the empty beaches, the warm light, the tavernas that actually have time for you. That's the Crete we wanted to share.

Villa accommodation with pool, coworking setup, communal areas, and outdoor terraces. Meals are not included but taverna eating is affordable.

How do I get there?

Fly to Heraklion (HER) or Chania (CHQ), then rent a car — about 1.5 hours to Plakias. The south coast needs a car; public transport is limited.

Can you swim in winter?

On good days, yes. Water temperatures are 16-19°C from November to April. Some people swim daily, others just enjoy the empty beaches.
