Living in South Tyrol, Italy

South Tyrol is the part of Italy that speaks German, eats Knödel alongside pasta, and has Dolomite peaks as its backdrop. It's the result of being Austrian until 1919 — the culture is a genuine fusion, not a tourist gimmick. Signs are bilingual, menus offer both Wiener Schnitzel and risotto, and the wine comes from steep mountain vineyards that produce some of Italy's best whites.

Tesimo (Tisens in German) sits on a sunny terrace above the Adige valley, about 15 minutes from Merano. The town is small and quiet — apple orchards, hiking trails, and mountain views in every direction. Merano is the nearest proper town: a spa city with thermal baths, a pedestrian promenade lined with palm trees (yes, at 300m elevation in the Alps), and wine bars pouring local Lagrein and Gewürztraminer.

For remote workers, the appeal is the combination of proper mountain wilderness with Italian food culture and infrastructure. Internet is fast, the trains run on time (it's basically Austria), and the food — from Speck ham to apple strudel to Michelin-starred restaurants — is extraordinary. It's not cheap, but it's not Norway either. A good meal runs €15-25, coffee is €1.50, and the quality of life is genuinely high.

Merano thermal baths

A stunning contemporary spa complex designed by Matteo Thun, with indoor/outdoor pools and mountain views. Day entry around €30.

Dolomite day hikes

The Dolomites are 1-2 hours by car. The Seiser Alm (Europe's largest high-altitude meadow) and Tre Cime are the classics.

Wine tasting in the Adige valley

South Tyrol produces exceptional white wines. Visit Kellerei/cantina along the wine road between Merano and Bolzano — tastings often free.
