The Vibe

Mornings start early — sunrise surf at Cloud 9 or a quiet yoga session, then into the coworking space by 9am. The pool and garden provide natural break spots between work sessions. Lunch is usually at a nearby carinderia or the on-site kitchen. Afternoons are flexible — more work, island exploration, or just hammock time. Evenings bring social events, beach bars, or group dinners.

Weekends are for island hopping — Sugba Lagoon, Magpupungko tidal pools, or boat trips to nearby islands. The Sunday rope swing at Maasin River is a local tradition.

Living in Siargao Island, Philippines

Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island in the eastern Philippines that became famous for its surf — Cloud 9 is one of the best reef breaks in Asia. But the island has grown beyond just surfers. A nomad scene has emerged in General Luna, the main town, with coworking spaces, cafes, and a young international crowd.

The cost of living is extremely low. A full Filipino meal at a carinderia costs PHP 80-120 (€1.30-2). A motorbike rental is PHP 350/day (€5.70). A private room in a local guesthouse runs PHP 15,000-25,000/month (€245-410). The pace is slow, the scenery is palm trees and turquoise water, and the people are genuinely warm.

The trade-off is infrastructure. Internet is improving but can be inconsistent. Power outages happen. Getting there requires a domestic flight from Manila or Cebu to Sayak Airport (IAO). The rainy season (November-February) brings typhoon risk. But for the right person — someone who values natural beauty, cheap living, and island community over convenience — Siargao is hard to beat.

Cloud 9 Surf Break

Asia's most famous wave — a thick, hollow right-hander over shallow reef. Best from August to November. Beginners should stick to the gentler breaks at Jacking Horse or Stimpy's.

Sugba Lagoon

A hidden lagoon on a nearby island — turquoise water surrounded by limestone cliffs. Take a boat from Del Carmen (1 hour north) and bring snorkeling gear.

Magpupungko Tidal Pools

Natural rock pools revealed at low tide — crystal-clear water over flat rock formations. Check the tide chart and go at low tide or you'll just see ocean.

Common Questions

What's the WiFi like?

50+ Mbps — decent for an island. Siargao's internet has improved a lot but can still drop during heavy rain or power outages. The coworking space has backup systems.

What's included in the price?

Room (shared, private, or premium), coworking access with focus rooms, pool, garden, WiFi, and community events. Meals and motorbike rental are extra.

How do I get there?

Fly to Siargao (IAO) via Manila or Cebu — daily flights on Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines. From the airport, a tricycle to General Luna costs PHP 500-700 (€8-11).

When's the best time to visit?

March to October for the best weather. August to November for the best surf. Avoid December-February when typhoons are possible.

Is it too remote for reliable work?

It's manageable but not bulletproof. The coworking space has the most reliable connection on the island. If your job requires 100% uptime with zero interruptions, Bali or Bangkok might be safer bets. If you can handle the occasional hiccup, Siargao rewards you generously.
