Château Coliving

Château Coliving is a coliving for digital nomads and remote workers set inside a genuine 12th-century castle in the heart of Normandy, France. Once home to one of Louis XIV’s commanders and featuring a chapel attributed to architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart, the property now operates as one of Europe’s most distinctive remote work retreats — combining medieval architecture with fast Wi-Fi, a dedicated coworking space, and a carefully curated community of location-independent professionals.

The Experience

The Château runs structured programs rather than open-ended drop-in stays. Colivers arrive and depart together on the same day, which creates a cohesive group from the start. Programs include themed months — Digital Minimalism Month, Writer’s Haven, French Immersion — as well as standard 27-night signature coliving stays in spring and summer, and special 12-night Discovery Weeks in autumn. Each program includes workshops, skill-shares, communal dinners, and analog rituals alongside deep-work time.

Daily life blends productivity with genuine leisure: campfires in the parkland, hikes through 80 hectares of grounds, communal cooking in the grand kitchen, games evenings, and the occasional karaoke session. Facilitators guide the group and help the community co-create its own activities.

The Space

The castle and adjacent manor house offer elegant double bedrooms, cosier attic rooms, and family-friendly apartments with private kitchens. Shared spaces include a fireside lounge, a grand dining hall, and a fully equipped workspace with dedicated call rooms and fast Wi-Fi. Meals are included — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — served in the dining hall or outdoors depending on season. The property also has a gym, library, and games room. In winter, rising water levels occasionally transform the grounds into a natural island.

Who It’s For

Château Coliving suits remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs who want structured community alongside their work — not just a desk in a shared house. Minimum stay is two weeks; most programs run four weeks. Up to 20 colivers share the space at any time. The community is intentionally international and mixed in background, age, and profession. It is explicitly not suited to people looking for a hotel experience or those who prefer to keep to themselves.

Location Highlights

The castle sits in Normandy, accessible from Paris in under three hours and from the UK via ferry or Eurostar connection. The surrounding landscape offers cycling routes, historic D-Day sites, and quintessential Norman countryside. The town of Cherbourg is nearby for practical needs. The property’s relative seclusion is a feature, not a drawback: the point is to focus, connect, and decompress without urban distraction.

Desk SetupCastle library + garden coworking

Work from a medieval castle with coworking in the castle library and outdoor garden spaces. Meals included — a private chef prepares communal meals.

The Vibe

Breakfast is communal in the dining hall — the chef has it ready early. Mornings are deep-work time: the castle library fills up, a few people work from the garden when the weather holds, and call rooms handle the Zoom overflow. Lunch is served together, which naturally creates a midday reset. Afternoons mix more work with workshops, skill-shares, or walks through the 80-hectare grounds. Evenings bring the group together again for dinner, campfires in the parkland, or games in the lounge.

Weekends open up for exploring Normandy — D-Day beaches, Mont-Saint-Michel day trips, cycling through bocage countryside, or visiting Cherbourg for market shopping. Many people stay on the grounds though — 80 hectares of parkland is a lot of space to not have explored yet.

Living in Normandy

Normandy is northern France at its most honest — apple orchards, stone farmhouses, dramatic coastline, and a food culture built on butter, cream, cider, and Camembert. It's not the south of France and it doesn't pretend to be. The light is softer, the air is cooler, and the landscape rolls rather than bakes.

For remote workers, Normandy offers something most French destinations don't: genuine seclusion without total isolation. Paris is under three hours by car or train. The UK is accessible by ferry from Cherbourg or Caen. The region has reliable internet infrastructure even in rural areas, and the cost of living is significantly lower than Paris or the Riviera. A three-course lunch at a local restaurant runs €14-18. A bottle of proper Normandy cider costs €3-5.

The historical weight of the region is real — D-Day beaches, medieval abbeys, the Bayeux Tapestry — but it's the everyday Normandy that sticks: morning markets in small towns, the smell of baking bread from the boulangerie, and the understanding that lunch is sacred and not to be rushed.

D-Day Beaches

Omaha, Utah, Juno — the landing beaches are an hour's drive and the experience is sobering regardless of your nationality. The American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer overlooks the coast.

Mont-Saint-Michel

The tidal island abbey is about 90 minutes south. Go early or late to avoid the worst crowds. The causeway walk at low tide is worth the effort.

Normandy Cider Route

Family producers in the Pays d'Auge offer tastings of calvados (apple brandy), pommeau, and farmhouse cider. Most are free and you'll leave with bottles.

I spent a month living in the chateau, and what a magical month! Almost every review will probably say that, and there's a reason. I met the most amazing people, ate delicious food, lived like a king, and learned a lot of history. I will definitely return, and I highly recommend anybody considering

I had a truly incredible month at Chateau Coliving in August 2025. I looked forward to it for months and really built it up in my imagination, so was a little worried it wouldn’t live up to expectations but in fact it exceeded them. The chateau itself is spacious but not huge - kind of perfect, sma

The Honest Briefing

The nearest airports are Paris CDG (3 hours drive), Caen (1 hour), or Cherbourg (40 min). Many guests take the train to Cherbourg or Valognes and get picked up. The château provides detailed arrival instructions and can coordinate transport from the station. Pack layers and a rain jacket — Normandy weather is maritime and changes fast. French basics help but aren't essential; the team speaks English.

Founders & Program Directors

A 12th-century castle sounds like a gimmick until you live in one. The thick walls, the silence, the parkland — it changes how you work and how you think. We built the programs around that energy.

Common Questions

What's the WiFi like?

100 Mbps fiber — yes, even in a 12th-century castle. Dedicated call rooms are available for video meetings. The coworking setup in the library and garden has been tested by hundreds of remote workers.

What's included in the price?

Accommodation, three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner prepared by the chef), coworking access, all workshops and program activities, and use of the gym, library, and grounds. Essentially everything except your travel to get there.

How do I get there?

Most guests fly into Paris CDG and take a train to Cherbourg or Valognes (about 3 hours). The team arranges pickup from the station. Alternatively, drive from Paris or take a ferry from the UK to Cherbourg. Detailed arrival logistics are shared after booking.

Is it cold in the castle?

The castle is properly heated. Spring and summer programs (May, September) enjoy mild Norman weather — days around 15-22°C. Evenings can be cool, especially during campfire sessions in the parkland, so bring a warm layer.

Do I need to speak French?

Not for the coliving — everything runs in English. But if you're exploring the region independently, basic French goes a long way in small-town Normandy. The French Immersion program includes language sessions if you want to learn.
