Coliving in Alfama, Lisbon
Lisbon's oldest district with steep cobblestone streets, fado music houses, and panoramic viewpoints over the Tagus.
Why Alfama works for remote workers
Alfama is the postcard version of Lisbon โ narrow alleys, tiled facades, laundry hanging between windows, and fado drifting out of tiny bars at night. Itโs the oldest neighborhood in the city, built by the Moors, and it survived the 1755 earthquake that flattened most of Lisbon. Living here feels like stepping back in time, which is either romantic or frustrating depending on how you feel about carrying groceries up medieval staircases.
For digital nomads, Alfama offers atmosphere in spades but demands some trade-offs. The streets are steep and winding, apartments tend to be small and old, and you wonโt find a modern coworking space on every corner. But if you want to live somewhere with genuine character rather than another generic European flat, itโs hard to beat.
Where to work
Cafes in Alfama are mostly traditional โ great for a quick bica, less great for a four-hour work session. Your best bet is heading downhill to Santa Apolonia where youโll find Outsite Lisbon and a few laptop-friendly spots near the cruise terminal. Fabrica Coffee Roasters on the edge of Alfama has good Wi-Fi and doesnโt rush you out. For dedicated coworking, Heden on Rua dos Fanqueiros is a short walk.
Food and social life
Tourist restaurants cluster around the Castelo de Sao Jorge, and theyโre mostly overpriced. Walk a few streets deeper and youโll find authentic tascas serving grilled sardines and bacalhau for half the price. Feira da Ladra (the Tuesday/Saturday flea market) is a local institution. Nightlife revolves around fado houses and a handful of low-key bars โ this isnโt a party neighborhood.
Getting around
Tram 28 is iconic but painfully crowded. Bus 734 and 737 are better options. Alfama is walkable but be ready for serious hills. Santa Apolonia metro station sits at the neighborhoodโs eastern edge.
Watch out for
Tourism pressure is real โ Alfama gets packed during the day, and short-term rental prices reflect that. Apartments can be dark and damp in winter. Pickpocketing on Tram 28 is common. Choose your street carefully: some are quiet and residential, others feel like a theme park.
